The Vela Vivaz is a 23’ Regulator Classic

The legendary North Carolina-built platform is a versatile fishing machine. The layout offers 360º fishing, and open bow for casting and fighting fish. The deep-vee hull and solid construction provide a safe platform for offshore adventures while providing a bit of comfort on windy days. Twin Yamaha four-strokes provide reliability and plenty of speed.

Capt. Felipe Araya

Felipe was born in Costa Rica and his father introduced him to fishing at a young age. As soon as he became old enough to fish on his own, he fell more and more in love with it, and eventually began fishing in national and international competitions.

He attended University and had a job (on land), but consistent success in tournaments led to opportunities to work in sport fishing and he decided to follow his passion. He became a licensed captain and has worked in sport fishing ever since.

He loves both inshore and offshore fishing. While adept at trolling and live-bait, jigging, popping and fly fishing is where Felipe really shines. He tries to create fun and unique experiences for his clients. He takes great pride in keeping the boat and tackle in top-shape, and he meets every trip with effort and enthusiasm.

His English is excellent and he loves teaching kids to fish!

Capt. Matt Reinemo

Matt was born on Nantucket Island and has been a passionate fisherman for his entire life. He is a fishing guide on Nantucket and owns the Nantucket Tackle Center. He is the author of Fishing Nantucket: A Guide for Island Anglers and Compass of My Soul: Essays from a Fishing Nut Navigating Family Life

He first came to Costa Rica in 2007 and ran a charter boat out of Golfito for a season. He returned as often as possible, the spectacular offshore fishing being the main draw. In 2021, Matt and his wife came to experience living abroad with their young family and fell in love with Guanacaste and the Pura Vida lifestyle.

Now he splits time between Costa Rica and Nantucket and is thrilled to be a part of the Vela Vivaz team!

The Vela Vivaz Story

The Vela Vivaz story is one of friendship and fishing bringing people together. It began October 7, 2021, when Matt met Felipe on a beach near the town of El Jobo in Northern Costa Rica. Matt’s search for a fly-rod roosterfish led him to Felipe.  Matt immediately recognized a talented, passionate, hard-working guide and Felipe appreciated Matt’s dedication, knowledge, and ability to put a fly in the right spot (sometimes).  While they didn’t get a rooster on fly that day, their friendship was born. Felipe and Matt to began fishing together regularly.  On their many adventures around Costa Rica together, the idea was hatched, and the plans came together for a versatile, light-tackle boat based out of the new Marina Flamingo.  Now it is here, and Felipe and Matt are excited about the opportunity to share their passion with clients. (And it took a few tries, but they got that fly-rod roosterfish).
